The Award for Ground-Breaking Innovations:
Innovation is a big driver of sustainability. All the companies below have shown how research, new methodologies of working, introduction of high-tech technology and improved information services, are all examples of how innovation can assist in improving sustainability in sugarcane production, milling or supply chains.
Godavari Biorefinaries is based in Mumbai, India, and produces sugar in addition to other foods, biofuels, chemicals, renewable energy, waxes, and other products, using sugarcane.
Godavari Biorefineries has been nominated for its innovative work producing 1,3-Butylene Glycol using sugarcane based bio-ethanol.
Through this innovation, Godavari Biorefineries has reduced the amount of waste in the production process by using the effluents of one process to serve as the raw materials for another process. Seeing the company encourage the use of renewable resources that have lower environmental impact and improved performance.
> ORION: Tereos Sugar and Energy
Brazil-based Tereos Sugar and Energy is a cooperative sugar group that processes agricultural raw materials into sugar, alcohol and starch.
Tereos Sugar and Energy has been nominated for the ORION initiative. The ORION initiative (Observed Remote Information from Orbital Navigation) aims to reduce the impact of unintentional and accidental cane fires in São Paulo state, Brazil, by using satellite imagery for fire detection.
The initiative enables quicker combatting of fires, and decreased environmental risks and damages.
> Muda Cana Program: Orplana & Solidaridad
Solidaridad, an international NGO facilitating sustainable supply chains and Orplana, an organisation representing and organising sugarcane producers in Brazil and abroad, joined forces to develop the Muda Cana programme.
This nomination comes from the Muda Cana Programme’s aim to ensure the profitability of producers through innovative training, which helps the producer and technician to make more profitable and sustainable choices. The training focuses on pre-sprout seedlings, agricultural defences, nutrition, soil preparation, systematisation, to help increase the current production level in an sustainable way.
Bangladesh-based Northern Agro Services produces organic crop-based balanced fertilisers and NPKS fertiliser.
Northern Agro Services’ recent ground breaking innovation is its fertiliser for sugarcane. The nomination indicates this fertiliser has been shown to improve yields by 36%, in line with the company’s ethos to provide farmers with technologically sophisticated sugarcane fertiliser, that exceeds a crop nutrition needs and reduces use of chemical fertilisers.
> Ingenieria y Refineria San Martin: Tabacal Agroindustria
Argentina-based Tabacal produces sugar, alcohols, bio-fertilizers, biofuels, bioelectricity, food and energy.
Tabacal prides itself on producing these products in a sustainable way, which honours the environment and the people with whom they work. To further improve the sustainability of their production, Tabacal has undertaken an initiative to further reduce waste in their production, improve efficiency, and reduce chemical inputs. This initiative included expanding the mill’s crush capacity, constructing and deploying a dual distillery and molecular sieve, improving organic compost processes and the development of biological pest management solutions.
> ReduSa: Raízen
Raízen is Brazil’s main manufacturer of sugarcane ethanol, and one of the world’s largest exporters of sugar to the international market, with approximately 4.3 million tonnes of sugar produced annually.
The ReduSa programme is Raízen’s latest innovation supporting sustainable sugarcane, which reduces Raízen’s water use in its 26 sugar, ethanol and energy production units.
Through innovative approaches to each element of production, over the last three years, the ReduSa initiative has saved 9 billion litres of water and achieved an energy reduction equivalent to 89 million kW through the reuse of hot water.
> NucaneTM Low GI Sugar: Sunshine Sugar
Australian company Sunshine Sugar produces raw and refined sugar products in New South Wales.InnovationSunshine Sugar is based in New South Wales, Australia and produces raw and refined sugar products.
